Rotterdam is really Hip-Hop minded and some people also call Rotterdam the Hip-Hop capital of Holland. In Rotterdam you see a lot of Hip-Hop things. Hip-Hop isn’t only the music it is a whole lifestyle! . It is also turntabalism also known as djing. It is also making graffiti or break dancing. Also there are more clothing shops coming in Rotterdam that are selling Hip-Hop clothes. The skating culture and the hip-hop culture has a lot of agreements and is good to see the clothing. Skaters wear Hip-Hop clothes and shoes for skaters are worn by Hip-Hoppers. Because Hip-Hop is getting bigger and more popular it is also to see in the clothing that people wear.
Besides the clothing you can also look to the events that are successful and see that Hip-Hop is booming. There are a lot of events where people look out to. You can say in the nightlife in Rotterdam (and also the most of Holland) there are two popular genres: House and Hip-Hop. That is in the nightlife but by day or in the evening there are more Hip-Hop events. In Rotterdam there is a big youth community that love Hip-Hop. In the politics they call it a urban lifestyle. Because there are a lot of young people with that lifestyle the politics are giving allowance so ‘urban’ events can be organized. The problem with me is that those events don’t support the upcoming talents. Most of the time it is for the bigger names in Hip-Hop. The little events where there is space for upcoming talents most of the time are poorly attended. A act is performing for maybe 15 people and that is not what he or she wants to do. I saw it with De Dichter in some places he had to perform. Those type of events had every time a bad promotion. I look on a lot of sites what there is to do, I read (free) magazines with a agenda and I walk through the city. Never I see something like a flyer or a poster about the event and if you don’t know something you can’t go to something. Besides the poor promotion also the concepts don’t combine the different forms of Hip-Hop with each other. It is or only dancing or only music.
What I want to do with the event that I’m organizing is to combine the different forms of Hip-Hop in one thing. It is also only for the upcoming talents from Rotterdam. The promotion will be better than all the other events. I will make more the use of internet promotion. That is easy and cheap. The event I will be organizing with a friend of me Charoon. We are planning to do the first edition in fall.

Next projects
Now that Leren Luisteren is online and some people loved it is time to think what the new music should sound like. Also we are planning how to release the music. Are we selling the product or are we placing it again on the internet for free. When are we releasing it. A lot of questions for us to answer.
De Dichter has recorded some new music. Some songs are done some songs just need a new couplet (in Hip-Hop music we say verse) or a chorus (in Hip-Hop we say a hook). De Dichter is saying his next release wil be all produced by G-Boah. G-boah is experienced because he was in one of Holland most popular Hip-Hop groups a few years ago. Now there are 8 songs done and they want to have 15 songs. De Dichter also recorded songs that don’t are produced by G-Boah but by himself or other producers. We don’t know yet what we are going to do with those songs. Maybe we send it to websites that wants exclusive songs for a compilation cd that they want to put together. Some of the songs we will leak on the internet alone so people can enjoy it.
Maybe we also shoot a video clip for one of the songs that is on Leren Luisteren. In that way we can promote the tape more. We don’t want to spend much money on that video clip because we want to save that money for the upcoming release with G-Boah. The promotion of that album has to be better. We already have people that want to shoot a video but not everyone is that experienced in shooting a clip. The clip must be quality off course.
We are also making a De Dichter t-shirt or hoodie. It is to wear while performing on stage and to sell those kind of merchandise. As a artist you have to make money in different ways. The guy that is designing the t-shirt is from Groningen. He connected De Dichter after De Dichter posted a tweet that he need a designer for his new t-shirt. The new communication ways are handy.
So you can see we are very busy with the new things to promote De Dichter better hopefully it all works out good.

The dutch Hip-Hop scene
Hip-Hop is now a big genre all over the world. A lot of people love to listen to Hip-Hop now that’s different because 20 years ago it wasn’t that popular. It was started in the united states and now people from the whole world are listening to it and now a lot of people are rapping. It is also done it different languages. In Europe Hip-Hop is very big in France, England and Germany. Now Hip-Hop is also become big in Holland. First most of the rappers were rapping it English and big names where Postmen (my nephew was also in that group) Uni-q and E-Life. Now the rappers that are rapping in Dutch are more popular then the rappers that are rapping English. Only the rappers that are rapping in Dutch won’t get big in other countries than Holland, Belgium, Surinam and the Antilles.
Like I said now the rappers that are rapping dutch are more popular and that is something from the last 4, 5 years. Everyone in Holland nowadays knows Ali B and Lange Frans. Those are the more commercial names. The ‘pure’ Hip-Hop heads like names as Winne and Jiggy Djé more. There is one big Hip-Hop record company and that is Top Notch. Top Notch is founded by Kees de Koning in 1995 and most of the Hip-Hop that is knows he has brought to the people. Almost of every young rapper wants Top Notch to sign him or her. De Dichter want that also but I don’t think that is necessary for him. Now with the internet you can do a lot more for yourself as artist. You don’t need a (big) record company anymore because a lot of names that became popular did that on their own. Someone like Hef became very popular and on youtube he got with his last video (Op een missie) more than 1 million views. On his last cd De Dichter produced one track called Vergeef Me. Hef also joined the label off Jiggy Djé named Noahs Ark. Noahs Ark is the second biggest Hip-Hop record company now.
For De Dichter it is important that if he wants to join a record company he have to do more than artists had to a few years ago for themselves. You won’t get that easy a a contract and the investments isn’t the same. But now Hip-Hop is bigger than ever and more rappers are coming on tv on programs like De Wereld Draait Door or TMF. So that is good thing for now. Dutch Hip-Hop is getting more popular with every day. Also on the big festivals that are held in Holland there are more Dutch Hip-Hop acts than ever. Festivals like Lowlands, Park, Pinkpop and a lot more.

Talent scouting
De Dichter has won a couple of talent scouts already in his young career. Most of the time it was something little and local in Rotterdam or his neighborhood. The plan is to do bigger talent scouting’s that are known province.
On 17 of march there were one talent scouting in Rotterdam called Your Talents. It were the finals after one round. The first round were 3 weeks earlier. De Dichter passed the first round easily. It wasn’t only a music show it was also for other acts like (break)dancers. Every act had only 5 minutes to show what they got and rock the public. Unfortunately De Dichter didn’t win the finals but he did it alright.
The next talent scouting where De Dichter is also competing is on april third. Than it is time for De Grote Prijs van Zuid-Holland in the category Urban. The showcase will be held at Watt Rotterdam. This is one of the biggest talent scouting’s and if a artist win this, he or she (in the urban category most of the time there are only males in it) will get a lot of shows in this region, money that can be invested in music equipments and a lot of recognition. Also will the winner be placed in the semi finals of De Grote Prijs van Nederland in the category Hip-Hop. Last year the winner of De Grote Prijs van Zuid-Holland was Unkown Eye and he alse made it to the finals of De Grote Prijs van Nederland. De Dichter has already send a demo to De Grote Prijs van Nederland organization. So if he doesn’t win De Grote Prijs van Zuid-Holland he still can be selected for De Grote Prijs van Nederland.
Even if De Dichter don’t won any of this talent scouting’s it will be a lot of attention for him so no matter what it is good promotion. Also he will get more stage practice so the performances will be better every time.

A booker
A booker is someone who search for shows for a artist that he have a contract with. A good booker has a lot of relationships in the industry and with programmers that are working for popstages. If you want a lot of shows and you are a artist it is a must that you have a booker. A artist on his own doesn’t have the relationships that a booker has. A booker also does all the paper work for an artist and knows when he will perform. Now De Dichter doesn’t has a real booker but I connected De Dichter with a friend of me and he does a couple of things that a booker is doing. That friend of me (Wouter) knows a lot of programmers because he is also a programmer for a popstage Popcentrale in Dordrecht. That is why he also know how bookers do the things they are doing and how they contact programmers. I don’t think Wouter will arrange many shows but every shows he can arrange is good for De Dichter now. I also arranged that Wouter also will do the bookings for Dion Masé. Wouter already arranger 2 shows for De Dichter and 3 for Dion Masé. The Biggest show he arranged for both is Definitie van Dopeheid in Tilburg. That is a huge Hip-Hop festival with a lot of big names so both of them are really happy with that show.
For De Dichter it is now important he will get shows because people will see him and not to forget it is a income for him.
In Holland you got two big bookers in the Hip-Hop game with the most popular artists. Missin Link and Top Billin. They put their artists everywhere so the artists have a lot of gigs. It is also good for the income off the booker.

Internet promotion
In the music business it was for years that a record company had the power to do whatever with a artist. They sold a lot of cd’s to the people and made millions of it (at least in the USA) and managers became rich. It was important for a artist he would be promoted and market good so the artist would be popular. A artist was dependent on what a record company does. Now time changed because the use of internet. As a artist you can do more independent. For someone as De Dichter that is positive. Still people have their differences about a big record company if you need them. De Dichter says he needs one and he wants to go to one. I don’t think he need one but a big record company can make things easier. The biggest benefits of a big record company are the relationships that they have with a lot of people that can promote a artist and the budget they have to promote and market a artist.
Why I don’t think De Dichter doesn’t need a record company is because the internet. The internet is giving everyone space to promote himself. You don’t have to come on TMF or MTV to have a successful video clip because you can put it on youtube, you don’t a music shop to sell your cd’s because you can directly send it to a person his home and you can put your music on hyves or myspace so people can directly listen to it. a artist you can make your own buzz. The only thing you need is a good plan and a good timing. Most of the things on the internet are for free so the promotion is also cheap. Off course a bigger budget is better for the promotion and you can reach a lot more. For me as a marketer it is obliviously that I want to use my own plans to promote De Dichter.

London City
In my little vacation that started February the 20th I went to London. I went for two days with a friend of me. I left on 25 and came back on the 27th of February. The reason I went to London is because it was very cheap. I went with Ryanair and the flight tickets only costs us €27 each. Besides shopping I also went to look a little bit how big the music is an England and how much stages there are. Especially Hip-Hop music I was searching for.
In England you have Hip-Hop and grime that are almost the same. In both genres a person is rapping but the beats are different. Grime has more house beats and grime is started in the UK. In Holland grime is also getting more popular and more popular acts like Zwart Licht are rapping over grime beats In Dutch. On a big Dutch Hip-Hop site they also report about the grime scene in the UK.
But back to London. In London Hip-Hop lives. London is off course is a big city with different cultures. Hip-Hop is one of the biggest because you have a lot of clothing shops. Big American rappers are coming more often there to perform and you got more clubs than in Holland. Unfortunately I did not see a lot of stages where someone can perform. In the center of the city there were more theatres for theater production not the kind of performances I’m looking for.
In (Hip-Hop)clothing shops I saw a lot of posters and flyers but on none I saw a Hip-Hop event. That was a little disappointing because I was specific searching for Hip-Hop events. How they promote it and how much events there are in London. In the shops they said their weren’t that much parties or events based on only Hip-Hop in the center of the city of London. Also I only saw big shops that are selling cd’s. I forgot the names of those shops but I didn’t saw little cd shops.
In the center of London I couldn’t find a lot about the Hip-Hop culture but the two days were a good time. I’m definitely going back to London for another time.

Tour
With De Dichter and a other friend that also raps we want to do a little tour. The other rapper is called Dion Masé. Also his real name. He is 22 but people know him as a rapper for 3 years now. He also released his EP a couple of weeks ago. The EP is called Leefstijl. Dion Masé had a lot of fame a couple years ago and people loves his music. Last year he wasn’t that active in the Hip-Hop scene so people forgot about him. Now he is back and because he is a friend of me and De Dichter we can do things together.
The tour we want to do is something that isn’t done in Holland if it comes to rappers. At least we don’t know about that. The plan is to do a couple of seven shows in autumn in small clubs/bars and the income of the crowd that is coming to watch our show. The income for the club is what the crowd is spending at the bar. In this way we don’t have costs for the place we want to rent and the only money we have to spend is for gas of the car to go to the place and money for the posters and flyers. What we also want to do is a local support act. He will get a percentage of the income we will get from the crowd. He will also promote the event in his city so more people will come. We also will put people on the guest list that are winning guest list spots on different sites we are promoting the different events. It is important the event will be visible for people and know about it so we will post it on every Hip-Hop site. We also put a mix cd together with 2 new tracks from De Dichter and Dion Mase and all the artists that are support acts for the shows we are doing. For a lot of support acts for us it will be the first time that they will get the exposure like that because they won’t be that famous. People always love new music so they will enjoy the mix cd and it is also good promotion for the events.
That is the tour for now that we have in mind.
